CONTRACTORS GUIDE Section 13 - ARCTIC SEAL - PREPARATION FOR COATING

Prior to application of
ARCTIC SEAL WHITE, the roof must be dry and free of dirt, debris, loose coating, caulking and oil. For proper surface preparation of:
PREPARATION FOR COATING

PREVIOUSLY COATED ROOFS
Wire brush and scrape off all loose coating. Remove oil, grease and chalky surface by washing with a household detergent solution. A stiff broom or brush may be required. Rinse with clear water.

NEW ROOFS
Wash with household detergent solution. Rinse with clear water. New metal roofs often retain residual oils. Additionally, weathered unprotected metal may oxidize which inhibits adhesion. If the surface has not weathered for at least 3 years or if heavily oxidized, treat the metal with a good quality commercial aluminum or galvanized metal conditioner. If this is not readily available, a mixture of 1:1 white vinegar and water applied with a mop will suffice.
Rinse with clear water.

REPAIRS BEFORE COATING

It may be necessary to make certain repairs before coating your roof. When inspecting your roof, carefully check the area around seams, moldings, stocks and vents as well as the roof's surface for RUST, CORROSION or OTHER DAMAGE SUCH AS CRACKS AND BREAKS. Repairs can ordinarily be done in a few hours.

SEAMS
The repair procedure is the same for every type of metal roof seam. Check for loose screws, spreading, parting or buckling. If the seams appear to be in good condition then roof coating is all that is necessary. However, if the seams are imperfect:

I . Remove all caulking or coating and tighten down screws.

2. Using a putty knife or trowel, apply ARCTIC SEAL WHITE PLASTIC CEMENT over the entire length of seam and 2" wider than the fiberglass membrane.

3. Apply the membrane in strips not longer than 36" and allow strips to
overlap 3"'. Embed the membrane into the
ARCTIC SEAL WHITE PLASTIC CEMENT and smooth it out. Always lay membrane over the entire length of the seem to assure complete protection - water may run anywhere along the seam.

4. Apply another coat of ARCTIC SEAL WHITE PLASTIC CEMENT over the membrane making sure that all edges and ends of the membrane are firmly embedded. If the edge moldings (see next section) are to be removed, place the ends of the membrane under the molding.

MOLDINGS
Edge moldings should fit tightly to the sides and top of roof. Tighten the screws if loose and replace if damaged. Before replacing onto roof:

I . Apply ARCTIC SEAL WHITE PLASTIC CEMENT liberally to the underside of molding and reset.

2. If the molding was tight or after you have reset it, apply ARCTIC SEAL WHITE PLASTIC CEMENT over the top of the entire molding being certain to cover all screw heads.

STACKS AND VENTS
If the stocks and vents are in fine working order, scrape away old coating and caulking and apply
ARCTIC SEAL WHITE PLASTIC CEMENT around the bass. Stacks and vents which are damaged or not in proper working order should be repaired or replaced. Before resetting:

1 . Remove all old coating and caulking from both the fixture and the roof surface.

2. Apply ARCTIC SEAL WHITE PLASTIC CEMENT liberally to the underside of the fixture bass and the roof area where it is to be set.

3. Tighten screws firmly and apply ARCTIC SEAL WHITE PLASTIC CEMENT around the base being certain to cover all screws heads.

ROOF SURFACE
Inspect the roof panels. Rust and oxidation are certain signs of intending roof coating failure. These areas should be wire brushed or sanded to clean metal.

1 . It these areas are just in the surface, the roof costing will prevent further deterioration. If the damage is deeper, utilize the ARCTIC SEAL WHITE PLASTIC CEMENT/MEMBRANE process outlined in SEAMS.

2. Cracks and breaks in the panels should be repaired in the same manner as SEAMS. If the break; has jagged or protruding edges. smooth them down level with the roof's surface and proceed with the ARCTIC SEAL WHITE PLASTIC CEMENT/MEMBRANE process extending the membrane 6" beyond the break.
